On Demand Book Manufacturing

Book manufacturers are offering on demand printing models because their customers, the publishers, find the model economically attractive.

Publishers contract with authors to market, print, and distribute titles in exchange for royalties and advances to the author. If, however, a title goes out of print, the rights revert back to the author. By digitizing book content, publishers can use on demand printing systems like our sigma line to keep books in print, and retain title rights. Publishers are even opening up their backlists to online searches for the same purpose.

Publishing contracts are being issued now that reflect these changes in distribution. Authors and agents are fighting back against these restrictive contracts.

I think that the Sigma Line technology will see increasing demand from printers and publishers but remain limited to the book manufacturing market until digital 4/c web applications are available.
