On the online retail front, Amazon.com is thriving with its latest digital deal: e-book rental. The idea is that students can rent textbooks using Amazon's Kindle service, apparently allowing them to save up to 80% from printed textbook list prices. The company says that tens of thousands of textbooks are available for the 2011 school year (details of the program here).
Kindle Textbooks are "Rent Once, Read Everywhere," says Amazon, as they can be read with free Kindle Reading Apps for PC, Mac, iPad, iPod touch, iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Phone and Android-based devices. [In related news, the rumour mill is churning with reports that Amazon will launch its own Android-based tablet computer this fall.]
